North-Linn Food Service
The goal of the North-Linn Nutrition Program is to encourage our students to make healthy food choices. We do this by providing nutritious meals and encouraging them to participate in the breakfast and lunch programs. We hope to do this by providing our students encouragement, resources and the knowledge about leading a healthy lifestyle through proper nutrition education and physical activity. One way this is done is through the Nutrition Leaders Program. Our menu patterns are designed to provide over time: 1/3 of the Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA) for key nutrients for lunch and 1/4 of the RDA for key nutrients for breakfast. Menus must meet nutritional goals when averaged over a school week and are analyzed by the FSD and the Iowa Department of Inspections & Appeals. An average of the school week must meet guidelines for calories, 5 key nutrients (protein, calcium, iron, and Vitamins A & C), total fat (not to exceed 30% of total calories), and saturated fat (to be less than 10% of total calories). In addition to meeting nutrition goals, each meal must provide the required number of food components and food items.
